The AI Seminar is a weekly meeting at the University of Alberta where researchers interested in artificial intelligence (AI) can share their research. Presenters include both local speakers from the University of Alberta and visitors from other institutions. Topics can be related in any way to artificial intelligence, from foundational theoretical work to innovative applications of AI techniques to new fields and problems.
On December 1, Dr. David Radke — Senior Research Scientist with the Chicago Blackhawks of the National Hockey League (NHL) — presented “Presenting Multiagent Challenges in Team Sports Analytics" at the AI Seminar.
Abstract:
This talk presents several challenges and opportunities within the area of team sports analytics and key research areas within multiagent systems (MAS). It specifically considers invasion games, where players invade the opposing team’s territory and can interact anywhere on a playing surface (ice hockey or soccer). Radke discusses how MAS is well-equipped to study invasion games and will benefit both MAS and sports analytics fields. He highlight topics along two axes: short-term strategy (coaching) and long-term team planning (management).
